Dedicated to

Healthy Oceans, Thriving Marine Life & Resilient Coastal Communities

Global Philanthropic Collaborative

Oceans 5 is a global philanthropic collaborative that has worked for 15 years to conserve our ocean for generations to come. Grounded in deep expertise and informed by the best available science, we focus on policy advancements in three urgent areas: expanding marine protected areas, ending overfishing and destructive fishing methods, and advancing ocean-climate solutions.

Our Approach

Our work is shaped by a strong record of impact and trusted relationships across the ocean conservation field. We support community-led, politically informed efforts – through agile grantmaking, shared learning, and durable partnerships with governments, funders, Indigenous leaders, and civil society – that turn local knowledge and global science into lasting policy change.

By convening diverse actors, aligning resources around common goals, supporting on-the-ground experts to advance campaigns, and leveraging our access to decision-makers, we help advance lasting policy outcomes that support resilient coastal communities, protect marine ecosystems, and support the climate.

Our Blue Planet

Protecting the ocean is essential to safeguarding the planet’s life and life-support system.

50%
of the oxygen on Earth is produced by the ocean.
3
billion people rely on the ocean for protein.
62
million people are employed in fisheries and aquaculture.
1/3
of global ocean fisheries are overfished.
3%
of the ocean is fully or highly protected.
90%
of the excess heat produced by climate change is absorbed by the ocean.

Roughly one third of the potential solutions for addressing climate change are ocean-based.

How We Work

Oceans 5’s work elevates ocean conservation and ocean-climate solutions as shared global priorities. By leveraging expertise, cultivating inclusive coalitions of advocates and funders, supporting science-based and community-informed strategies, and strengthening policy and political will, we help ensure conservation efforts are inclusive, evidence-based, well-resourced, and long-lasting.

Together, these efforts contribute to a restored and resilient ocean that sustains marine life and coastal livelihoods for generations.
